The Best Dishwasher Safe Pots And Pans

The Best Dishwasher Safe Pots And Pans

However (and however often) you cook at home, decent cookware is one of the essentials which no household should be without. Not everyone will need a complete set – dedicated crepe pans and egg poachers being perhaps more for the specialist – but good-quality saucepans and skillets are a must-have if you are looking to impress in the kitchen.

As anyone who’s attempted to save money by skimping on cookware will tell you, with pots and pans you tend to get what you pay for: cheap items will degrade quickly and can even lend nasty flavors to whatever you cook in them, while well-made pieces can be sound investments which pay you back many times over the long run.

Good cookware will need to be strong enough to last, and to take the heat and whatever else comes its way; and it needs to conduct heat as quickly and efficiently as possible. The material the cookware is made from has a major impact on these factors, as well as making a difference to how you’ll need to clean and care for it.

One big issue for modern cookware shoppers is whether or not the pans are dishwasher safe: how you plan on cleaning your pots and pans will make a big difference to which set you end up buying. Luckily, the market is flooded with choice, with brands from Cuisinart to T-fal offering quality dishwasher safe cookware at a range of prices.

As with any big consumer decision, it pays to do your homework so that you know what you’re looking for when shopping for new cookware. Below are the best dishwasher safe pots and pans available on the market.

Joyous Household rating:

  • The multi-metal construction of the Circulon Infinite range of cookware utilizes a stainless steel base with an aluminum core, providing quick and even heat distribution no matter your cooking surface.
  • The Infinite 10-Piece Cookware Set has been made using heavy-gauge hard-coat anodized aluminum, making it a long-lasting and durable choice that’s perfectly safe for cleaning in your dishwasher.
  • This Infinite cookware is oven safe up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit; and the fact that the lids are made using stainless steel, rather than the tempered glass which is more common in modern dishwasher safe cookware sets, means you can even keep the lids on while using the cookware in the oven.
  • The design choice of using stainless steel lids does have the downside of not allowing you to see what’s cooking while the lid’s on, but it’s significantly more durable and harder to break than glass; especially if you plan on using your cookware in the oven as well as on the hob.
  • The 10 pieces which make up this cookware set include all the basics – saucepans and skillets, as well as a stock pot and a sauté pan. Specialist chefs may need a wider range of pots and pans, but the rest of us should be more than happy with the selection on offer here.

Circulon are an American cookware manufacturer, and their Infinite range offers high-end cookware which marries the resistance of stainless steel with the lightweight strength of aluminum.

The Infinite 10-Piece Cookware Set boasts a stainless steel base with an aluminum core, so that anyone using it can enjoy quick and even heat distribution, regardless of what surface they’re cooking on. The set is oven safe up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit – more than enough for most recipes and cooking styles – and the relatively uncommon design choice of using stainless steel lids means that even the lids on this cookware can be used in the oven.

A versatile and heavy-duty cookware set for the serious home cook, the Circulon Infinite range isn’t the flashiest on the market; but if you want quality cookware that’s safe for the oven as well as the dishwasher, it’s tough to beat.

What is dishwasher safe cookware?

Dishwasher safe cookware is a catch-all term which describes any cookware (pots, pans and related kitchen equipment) which is safe to clean in a dishwasher, and won’t be damaged by being cleaned in this way. The majority of American homes now have at least one dishwasher; a real labor-saving device which removes the chore of washing up after dinner with a few button presses. As a result, dishwasher safe cookware is more popular than it’s ever been, which has led to an ever-increasing range of dishwasher safe options on the market, and the lower prices which come with increased supply. Put simply, dishwasher safe cookware is the norm on the American and European markets, and if you’re shopping for some you’ve got some good options to choose between.

When looking for dishwasher safe cookware, the best place to start is with the material from which the pots and pans are made. Dishwasher safe cookware is commonly made using one of two metals – aluminum or stainless steel. Both can be repeatedly cleaned in a dishwasher without degrading or corroding: this separates aluminum and stainless steel cookware from copper and cast iron pans, which need to be washed by hand to avoid damage and corrosion. Stainless steel cookware is probably the most distinctive by appearance: the clean, shining steel will complement and enhance any kitchen setup. Stainless steel is also strong and oven safe up to around 350 degrees Fahrenheit, while providing rapid and uniform heating. It can, however, be tough to clean: some foods will stick to the steel in a fashion that’s tough to remove, but soapy water and elbow grease should be enough to clear up most things which the dishwasher misses.

Aluminum cookware is a dishwasher safe alternative to stainless steel, and it’s available with a number of different treatments and coatings. These coatings serve a variety of purposes, and can be broadly separated into soft-coat aluminum and hard-coat anodized aluminum. Soft-coat aluminum is typically non-stick and long-lasting: as well as being easy to clean, the non-stick coating means you need to use less oil when cooking, making it a great choice for anyone trying to eat more healthily. Be aware that soft-coat aluminum really is just aluminum with a soft coating, so avoid using metal utensils when cooking or metal scourers when cleaning your soft-coat aluminum cookware.

Hard-coat anodized aluminum is also non-stick, but unlike soft-coat aluminum, good quality hard-coat anodized aluminum hasn’t been coated so much as cladded: this means the coating isn’t going anywhere, keeping your cookware safe from metal utensils and scourers. It’s also non-reaction, which means it should stay strong and corrosion-resistant for as long as most stainless steel cookware. Hard-coat anodized aluminum cookware is oven safe – in some cases up to temperatures of around 475 Fahrenheit – while staying remarkably lightweight for such heavy-duty pieces. With hard-coat anodized aluminum cookware you should expect high-end prices, but this is one case where you should count on getting what you pay for.

Why buy dishwasher safe cookware?

Good quality cookware is a home essential: even if we don’t all need a complete set of cookware, a good saucepan and skillet should be considered the bare minimum for kitting out even the smallest kitchen. If you have a dishwasher, or plan on buying one in the future, it’s simply good sense to make sure the cookware you’ll be using is compatible with it. Most of us already have collections of cookware, some bought in sets and some pieced together over longer periods of time. Whether you’re looking to kit out a home for the first time, need to upgrade after some old pots and pans bit the dust, or would just like to expand your options in the kitchen, there are a number of good reasons to consider buying a new set of dishwasher safe cookware.

As with any significant consumer purchase, exactly which set of dishwasher safe cookware will be best for you will depend largely on your needs, and the environment in which you do your cooking. Different items of cookware serve different purposes: saucepans and skillets are certainly the most common, but sauté pans, griddle pans, woks, stock pots, casserole dishes, steamers and pressure cookers are all popular pieces of cookware. That’s before you start looking at the truly specialist items, which include egg poachers and crepe pans. If you don’t know how to sauté and have no interest in learning, a good sauté pan won’t be near the top of your list when it’s time to make your purchase. On the other hand, if you love a good poached egg and are always looking for ways to improve your cooking, something as niche as an egg poacher could be the gadget you never knew you needed.

Besides your personal cooking style and preferences, the type of hob you do your cooking on – and what said hob is made from – can make a big difference when deciding on your cookware. Gas and electric hobs (by far the most common in American households) will heat any metal, so your options remain open if you have either of those in your kitchen. Induction heaters can only heat magnetizable metals, which means that when it comes to dishwasher safe cookware, stainless steel is the only workable choice. If your hobs are ceramic, or you have something like an Aga with a solid hotplate, these work best with thick pans: cast iron cookware is ideal for use with these cookers, but if you’re set on something that’s dishwasher safe then hard-coat anodized aluminum will be the best way to go. Whatever your kitchen and whatever your cooking needs, there’s dishwasher safe cookware on the market for you.

Things to consider

If you’ve decided to invest in some dishwasher safe cookware, there are a number of things to consider before committing to make your purchase.

  • Materials. The metal your dishwasher safe cookware is made from (your main choice is between stainless steel and varieties of aluminum) will have a big impact on how well it cooks, how easy it is to clean and how long it lasts. Other materials may also be used in a set of cookware, especially with regards to the lids for pots and pans: a common design choice is to use glass lids, which are easier to see through while cooking but heavier and easier to break than lids made from the same metal as the cookware.
  • Your hob. Gas or electric hobs will heat any metal cookware without problems, but induction heaters will only work with magnetizable metals like stainless steel, while cookers with solid hotplates work best with thick, flat pans like hard-coat anodized aluminum. Start shopping for your dishwasher safe cookware by thinking about your kitchen, and you’re much likelier to be happy with the end result.
  • Your cooking needs. We all need the basic pots and pans, but are there any particular pieces of cookware you consider essential? Is there anything you’re missing, or a new item you’d like to get your hands on? How many people do you typically cook for, and how often will most of the cookware be used? These are some of the questions you can ask yourself to start figuring out which dishwasher safe cookware will be best for you.
  • Your cooking style. Stainless steel cookware is great for searing and browning, making it a great choice if you love to sear and sauté. Aluminum cookware, whether soft-coat or hard-coat anodized, is non-stick and therefore the best option for sauces. Both stainless steel and aluminum cookware have their specialties, so the best cookware for you will depend on how you plan on cooking with it.
  • Number of pieces. If you aren’t looking for a complete set, there are many smaller sets and individual pieces available in a range of materials and styles. This article assumes you’re looking to invest in a set of dishwasher safe cookware, but most of the advice here applies even if you’re only looking for a single item.
  • Size and weight. This will depend on large part on what the cookware is made from: stainless steel is significantly heavier than aluminum. The hard-coat anodized aluminum tends to be heavier than its soft-coat cousin, but this difference is negligible compared to the difference between aluminum and steel. When it comes to the pots and pans, the size you need will naturally depend on the size of your kitchen and how many you plan on cooking for.
  • Ease of use. Good cookware should have solid handles that are positioned sensibly on the pots and pans, making them easy to carry and move, even while hot. Look for any design choices which should increase the efficiency and ease of use of the cookware – pouring lips on saucepans and viewing portals on steamers are two examples of this.
  • Price. Of course, price will matter more to some people than others, but whatever your budget it’s good practice to establish how much you’d like to spend before you start shopping in earnest. Cheap starter sets are available for around $50 and up, with higher-end cookware starting at around $100 for a small set and scaling up from there as the number of pieces and build quality increase.

Risks and warnings

Using dishwasher safe cookware for its intended purpose – cooking – is no more or less dangerous than cooking with any other cookware, which is to say that care should be taken to avoid burning oneself or others, especially if children or animals will be in the kitchen. Besides this, there are a few basic principles for ensuring your dishwasher safe cookware stays safe and strong for years to come:

  • Avoid using metal utensils or scourers on soft-coat aluminum cookware. They will remove the soft coating, greatly reducing the lifespan of the cookware by opening it up to rust and corrosion. The soft coating can also come off during cooking if loosened by metal utensils, which will ruin the food.
  • Try to avoid overheating your cookware: soft-coat aluminum should not be used in ovens at any temperature, while stainless steel should only be used up to temperatures of around 350 Fahrenheit. Hard-coat anodized aluminum is better at high temperatures, but you should never place or leave an empty pan in an active oven or on a hot burner.
  • Store your dishwasher safe cookware carefully in a clean and dry place. Always dry your cookware thoroughly before putting it away, as this will preserve the longevity of the product.
  • Let your dishwasher safe cookware cool before washing it: cooling down the cookware too rapidly can do permanent damage to the metal, which will significantly reduce the years of use you get from the cookware. This is true whether you are washing your cookware in the dishwasher or by hand.
